Shropshire Low Maintenance Garden Design & Landscaping

There is an ever increasing trend towards low maintenance gardening. We all have a lot less time on our hands and want to spend our leisure time enjoying our garden, not weeding beds and cutting lawns.

The general theme of low-maintenance gardens is more hard landscaping, e.g. paving areas, gravel, slate, pergolas etc. , and less soft landscaping, e.g. turf, garden beds etc.

These are just a few ideas. Our garden designers are expert at creating low maintenance gardens and can offer a lot of good advice.

Here are a few more specific areas for you to think about relating specifically to a low maintenance garden:

Fencing

If you currently have timber fencing, are they lap panels (wood slats run horizontal) or featheredge panels (wood slats run vertical)? Featheredge panels last 10 years longer than lap panels because they are a lot stronger. They are also pressure-treated which means you will never have to treat them every year.

Turf

Is more than a third of your garden turfed? If so then depending on the size of your garden, you probably spend more time cutting grass than enjoying sitting in your garden. In low-maintenance gardens, at least two thirds of the garden should be hard landscaped in a combination of e.g. paving, stone, gravel, and timber.

Paving Areas

You can use a combination of slab sizes to make the patio and paths more interesting but the key here as far as low maintenance is concerned is to ensure that the slabs are laid on a bed of wet mortar. Also the joints between the slabs must be pointed in such a way as to ensure no grass or weeds will come through the gaps.

Decking

Decking boards do not need any maintenance as long as heavy duty tanalised boards are used. Otherwise, you need to treat the boards with decking stain every year.

Pergolas and Arches

These add height and therefore interest to the garden. All timber needs to be fully tanalised else it will need constant treatment against the elements and will easily rot.

Water feature

Small raised water features are useful as they will break up large areas of hard landscaping and are relatively low maintenance.

Planting

You can still have plants in a low maintenance garden. Evergreen plants don't drop any leaves and need very little or no attention through the year. Large low level beds can be replaced with smaller raised beds which are easier to access and maintain. These could be constructed from brick, rendered block or tanalised sleepers.

Trees

Certain trees can be high maintenance so choose small slow growing varieties which are easy to maintain.
