Block Paving

Driveway block paving is currently the most popular driveway solution. It is cost effective and low maintenance. Unlike tarmac or concrete, you have a choice of styles, colours and patterns.

If the drive does get damaged or you get an oil spill, the damaged driveway blocks can be taken up and replaced in a matter of minutes.

Many people have suffered over the years with sinking blocks and weeds growing through the blocks. Drive block paving will only be as good as the contractor who laid it, insufficient hardcore and lack of weed control will always lead to problems.

A cheap job will normally result in shoddy workmanship and unsuitable/insufficent materials.

Setts

If you want more of a traditional look than standard driveway block paving offers then another option is to use driveway setts.

Block paviors are a single standard size of 200mm x 1000mm and are used extensively on modern residential developments.

If you are looking for a more traditional look, then setts are available in different sizes and colours.

We have used setts extensively on period and listed properties in Telford, Shrewsbury and the rest of Shropshire where the aesthetics of materials are of prime importance.

Installation

Laying the block paving or setts themselves is the easiest part of the installation. The difference between the professional companies and the cowboys is the work that is done before the blocks or setts are laid.

We take the surface material on the existing drive down to a sufficient depth to allow a good bed of MOT hardcore to be laid and compacted. This provides a firm base and will prevent the blocks from sinking.

We then cover this with a second layer of much finer hardcore dust or plainings which again are compacted down. This then forms a concrete-like base on which a thin layer of sharp sand can be laid prior to laying the blocks.

We normally suggest a darker colour block or sett around the perimeter of the drive, normally charcoal and these are laid on a full bed of mortar to prevent movement.

The inner block paving or setts are then laid in a pattern of your choice. For block paving we recommend the Herringbone pattern as this locks the blocks very well. For setts, we normally lay these in parallel lines to the front of the building.

Finally we brush in kiln dried sand and compact the whole drive once more to prevent the blocks or setts from moving.

A correctly laid block pave drive will support the weight of any number of cars and even light commercial vehicles.

We can provide samples of block paving and traditional setts on request. Manufacturers include Bradstone, Marshalls, Wyresdale, and Plaspave. For Telford paving or Shrewsbury paving, give us a call.

Maintenance

Drive block paving and setts are popular because they lasts a lifetime and do not require a lot of maintenance. If you see a new block pave drive with grass or weeds growing between the blocks, then the groundwork has not been done correctly. We provide professional paving installation in Telford, Shrewsbury, and the majority of Shropshire.

Once blocks or setts are compacted it is not very easy to remove any blocks on a block paving drive. However if for instance you have an oil spill on the drive then dont worry, we have the tools to replace the affected blocks for you and the drive will look as good as new. This would not be possible with tarmac or imprinted concrete.

Sealing

We do not recommend sealing block paving or setts on a driveway. Sealing a newly installed block pave drive will give it that shiny 'new' look but once sealed, the process may need to be repeated if the old sealer starts to flake which is a common occurrence.

By sealing the driveway blocks, the drive will lose its porous properties and the other disadvantage is that the sealer can make the drive very slippy when wet.
