Brick, Block and Sleeper Retaining Walls

If your garden is not flat, the chances are you will require some form of retaining wall to tier the garden into different levels. A tiered garden adds a new dimension to the garden and adds immediately adds interest to the garden.

The choice of retaining wall depends on the amount of material to be retained, the height it is been retained at, and your own preference of materials to be used.

Sadly there are a large number of rogue traders in the marketplace who will offer you everything and deliver nothing. If you are looking for a builder or landscaper to build your wall, always ask to see their portfolio, including examples of walls similar to what you are looking for yourself. Also, always ask for references.

Brick walls

Brick walls can be single brick (4") walls or double brick (9") walls depending on the strength required. Single brick walls will usually be topped with coping stone and double brick walls will usually be topped with header bricks to add strength. Walls can be straight or curved walls and steps can be built into the wall where required.

Our bricklayers have over 25 years experience and can build retaining walls, decorative walls or complete brick buildings if you wish. Whatever the size of the wall we can provide you with a very competitive quote.

We provide you with a large variety of sample bricks to choose from to ensure that the wall matches your house, the surroundings, and the design of the new garden.

Block walls

In the case of contemporary garden design, walls can be built using solid or hollow breezeblocks and rendered with a finish and colour to suit the design.

Sleeper walls

An increasing number of people are opting to use using new timber sleepers for retaining walls. These have a number of advantages over brick:

1. The retaining walls are a lot stronger
2. They can be more aesthetically pleasing than brick in both traditional and contemporary designs
3. They double as a seat!
4. No bricklaying is required so costs are reduced so you get a better deal

Note: We do not use old creosoted railway sleepers. The use of these in the UK has now been restricted for health reasons.
