Large Garden featuring Koi Pond, Shropshire

The Brief
To resolve a very bad drainage problem and create a practical outdoor living space. This garden in Ellesmere lies on a clay bed and suffered with standing water after only as little rain.
Our Solution
We completely removed the turf and surface clay soil and installed a series of heringbone gravel drainage channels across the garden, allowing water to drain off to the beds where moisture loving plants would soak the water up.
We then created a separate seating area at the bottom of the garden. We installed decorative trellis fencing, and behind that installed a large decking area with steps, leading up to a smaller paved seating area overlooking the field.
We built a self-contained water feature from tanalised sleepers which compliments the timber decking area.
In the main garden area, we built a 5 metre by 3 metre Koi pond complete with pump and low maintenance filtration system.
The rest of the garden was covered with top soil with a very high sand content to improve drainage even further and relaid the garden with quality turf.
The turf was edged with brick paviors to allow easy mowing and moisture loving plants were introduced to the new beds to complete the makeover.
