Brick retaining wall and steps - Cleobury Mortimer, Shropshire
This 12 metre long wall curves into the central flight of steps. A 9 inch wall (double brick thickness) such as this one is necessary if the wall is being used to retain material behind it. Red engineering bricks were used for the main structure with 4 inch breeze blocks behind the facing brick (for added strength), and charcoal bricks were used as header brcks to match in with the brickwork of the house.

Small brick wall and steps - Telford, Shropshire
This small 4 inch wall defines the two levels of the garden and adds interest to the garden. On 4 inch walls, coping stones such as these are generally used. The steps were finished in the same slabs as the patio and path.

Strong 9 inch retaining wall - Madeley, Telford, Shropshire
A full 9 inch wall was used here to retain the soil behind the new patio. Header bricks were used to finish off the top of the wall. Note this wall was built in the middle of Winter. As long as the correct precautions against blistering are taken, there is no reason why brickwork cannot be done throughout the year.

4 inch brick wall - Hadley, Telford, Shropshire
This garden had a gentle slope but the customer wanted a flat decking area. Therefore we tieried the garden into two levels and built a small retaining wall. As well as using coping we also built small pillars and finished them with pier caps.

Multi coloured wall - Newport, Shropshire
The brickwork of this property had a very distinctive brickwork made up of five different types of brick. We found out exactly what bricks had been used for the house, sourced the bricks, and built their new garden wall to match perfectly with the house.

This brick wall demonstrates one way of dealing with sloping ground. The wall can either be tiered or as in this example built in Wellington it can be sloped. Watch out for cowboy builders, there are plenty around. Shropshire Garden Design Ltd only use experienced bricklayers and the quality of our work speaks for itself.

Sandstone walling - Childs Ercall, Shropshire
This wall uses Bradstone natural sandstone walling. Every brick is a different size and shape and therefore the morter joints will never be even and are not meant to be. This is a natural material, and quite expensive but looks fantastic when built. Shropshire Garden Design used this walling product for this years show garden at Shrewsbury Flower Show and it was a hit with the judges and public alike.

This Stonemarket Yorkstone walling is available in a variety of sizes and colours and is very versatile and hard-wearing. You do not have to use brick for retaining walls. Sleepers are even stronger than brick and will suit both traditional and modern designs. Retaining walls and steps with sleepers - Oswestry, Shropshire
In this example, sleepers have been bolted together to form a strong wall which can also double as a seat. Note we do not use original sleepers as these contain tar which breaches current Health & Safety legislation. new tanalised sleepers look similar to original sleepers but do not contain tar, they are presssure treated to preserve the timber.
